Answer engine optimization

A working definition of answer engine optimization, its relationship to SEO, and what answer-ready content can and cannot achieve.

In brief

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making information clear, accessible and well supported so that search and answer systems can use it to answer a question. It describes work on answer readiness, not a guarantee of selection.

Scope note. Working definition used by this publication. AEO is not a single platform standard; usage overlaps with SEO and GEO.

What AEO covers

A useful starting point is the reader’s question and the page responsible for answering it. AEO work can include resolving ambiguous wording, putting a direct answer beside its evidence, fixing inaccessible text, and explaining important qualifications. The answer should remain useful when a person reads the page directly.

This is not a separate replacement for technical SEO. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google says that no additional technical requirements or special AI optimizations are necessary. Source: Google’s AI feature guidance.

Make an answer usable

  1. Choose the question. Identify what the reader needs to decide, not just the keyword you want to repeat.
  2. Give the answer and its boundary. Keep dates, conditions and exceptions near the claim they qualify.
  3. Make the evidence inspectable. Link to the exact source, distinguish a company statement from external evidence, and remove claims the source cannot support.
  4. Check the delivered page. Important text and links should exist in accessible HTML, not only inside an image or after an interaction.

These are this wiki’s editorial recommendations. Google’s documented fundamentals include textual content, discoverable internal links and structured data that matches the visible page. Source: Google.

Example: a returns-policy answer

Illustrative example, not a measured case study. A shop’s returns page says, “Most items can be returned,” while the actual exclusions are buried in a PDF. A clearer answer states the return window, when it starts, which items are excluded, and how to begin a return. The page links the policy document and records the effective date.

This change helps a customer interpret the policy and gives an answer system a better-bounded passage to use. It does not demonstrate that a system fetched the page, quoted it correctly or sent a customer to the shop.

What this does not prove

An answer capsule, FAQ layout or schema block does not compel an engine to cite a page. Google explicitly says that new AI text files and special schema are not required, and that crawling, indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Source: Google.

Do not infer a single retrieval pipeline shared by all platforms. Assess actual outputs using the AI visibility measurement method, separating a mention from a citation or recommendation.

Where AEO fits

Use AEO versus GEO to separate answer readiness from the broader study of generative responses.
